Toni and Raymond Smith were designers who had a pottery business in the Torquay area since 1951 making table ware and souvenir items. In 1967 they bought out the Babbacombe Pottery together with Geof Hiscock and traded as the Toni Raymond Pottery Group. They employed additional staff and introduced new products gradually fazing out the earlier and traditional Torquay pottery styles to be replaced with new designs including some fine table ware, kitchen containers, and handmade animals like cats, rabbits and cockerels, plus much more. Deirdre Wood the long serving chief designer retired about 1971 as the new work styles limited her talent. Initially it is believed a simple mark of just Babbacombe Devon was used for a short period, but later two types of mark for Toni Raymond Pottery were adopted without mention of Babbacombe.
In 1986 Philip Laureston Smith and owner of Laureston Designs of Torquay, bought his parents business Toni Raymond Ltd. and he amalgamated the two businesses under one roof at Babbacombe. Philip then restored the Babbacombe Pottery name.
